Increasing Women's Participation in Education Globally

The conference began with a keynote address by Dr. Nelly Stromquist, professor at the University of Southern California, titled “Global Policies, Local Realities: The Increasing Distance between Educational Policy and Social Transformation.”  This was followed by three working sessions: 1) The identification of key issues affecting women’s participation in education; 2) The review of research required to determine the effectiveness of efforts to increase women’s participation; and 3) The development of critical strategies to impact the implementation of policy related to improving women’s participation in education.

At the conclusion of the conference, a set of policy recommendations were developed focusing on the need to transform educational institutions since they are currently perceived as being neutral in terms of gender.  Plans are currently underway to publish these recommendations and for these participants to meet periodically to establish formats for collaborative research.
In addition to the Women’s Research Institute, the conference was sponsored by the following: the Marjorie Pay Hinckley Endowed Chair in Social Work and the Social Sciences, David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies, International Vice President’s Office, Department of Educational Leadership and Foundations, and the Department of Sociology.
