Mahmoud, S. (2005). Politics of piety: The Islamic revival and the feminist subject. New Jersey : Princeton University Press.
A ethnographic study of Islam in Egypt shows that there are some subtle differences between these women and the women of the Middle East.  As a result, a commentary on religion and gender roles particularly in Islam can result.
